i-bond question for the i-bond queen, baselle!

January 5th, 2006 at 04:52 pm

Hi Baselle, and anyone else who might be reading this!

I bought an I-Bond in late October, for $400. The value hasn't changed--that is, I can't see that any interest has been added to it, though I thought it was supposed to be applied monthly. Can you explain why this might be happening. (In other words, is something wrong?)

Thanks!

My guess is you won't see interest till the 4th month, since you are penalized 3 months interest if you cash in before 5 years. Most of the calculators I've seen deduct 3 months interest from the bond.

retire@50 is right. The interest won't show up until February.

Go to the Savings Bond Calculator at http://wwws.publicdebt.treas.gov/BC/SBCPrice and type in 02/2006 in the "Value As Of" field (upper left). Type in the rest of your bond's info, and you will see what the bond will be worth in February.

Thank you! I didn't realize there were other I-Bond kings and queens about, though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised--lots of smart folks here.

oh mi god...I'm now the I-bond queen? Smile Not only is everybody else right, I'll add a little twist. It also means that if you hold an I-bond for the 5 years, the difference between 4 yr 11 month and 5 years will be a heck of a jump. (the 3 month penalty going away).
